As per recommendation of the “National Policy of Education”,1986, District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETS) have been established in our country with a view to restructure and reorganize the teacher education system and uplift the standard of elementary education. Setting up of DIETS started in 1989 by Indian Govt. DIET is a centrally sponsored scheme. In a phased manner, the Govt.of Assam also started establishment of DIETS in Assam.
The government of India announced the establishment of 3rd phase DIET in the year 1996-97. DIET Nalbari is the product of 3rd phase DIET. It is fully functioning in on 8th February,1999. It started its functioning from Nalbari Law College as it didn’t have its own building at that time. The opening meeting was presided by Late Prabhat Narayan Choudhury, Ex MLA on 8th Feb,1999. The then Education minister Sjt Thaneswar Boro and Commissioner and Secretary(Education Dept.), Sjt Dinesh Ch. Barman were present at that meeting. Since 1999, DIET Nalbari has been performing its duties and activities as a nodal academic institutions at the district level for improving the quality of elementary education in the district and for providing resource support at the grass root level for the success of the programs being undertaken in the areas of elementary education.
